Bio

Therapy shouldn’t require you to leave parts of yourself at the door.

I’m Brian Kennedy, and I work with LGBTQ+ adults, couples, throuples, and polycules who are ready to stop surviving and start living more authentically. Many of my clients have spent years trying to become someone they thought they had to be instead of discovering who they’ve been all along.

Some are exploring their sexual orientation or gender identity. Some are carrying the weight of growing up gay in families, churches, or communities where authenticity came with consequences. Others are navigating relationships, intimacy, sex, kink, or consensual non-monogamy while trying to separate shame from desire. Many are living with HIV and are exhausted by the stigma, grief, or isolation that still exists decades into the epidemic.

The common thread? They’re tired of performing.

Performing masculinity. Performing confidence. Performing the version of themselves that kept them safe but no longer allows them to feel fully alive.

That’s where our work begins.

I specialize in helping people untangle what I often call “gay trauma”. The invisible wounds created by rejection, bullying, religious harm, family expectations, discrimination, and years of learning that love or acceptance had to be earned. Those experiences don’t simply disappear because you came out. They often show up years later as anxiety, perfectionism, people-pleasing, relationship struggles, sexual shame, loneliness, or feeling like you never quite belong.

Together we’ll explore those patterns with curiosity instead of judgment.

My approach is trauma-informed, collaborative, and deeply affirming. I integrate Internal Family Systems (IFS), Gottman Method, Relational Life Therapy, DBT, and other evidence-based approaches to help you understand not just what you’re struggling with, but why those patterns developed in the first place.

Whether we’re working through relationship conflict, rebuilding intimacy, navigating kink or BDSM dynamics, processing an HIV diagnosis, healing religious trauma, or helping you reconnect with the parts of yourself you’ve learned to hide, therapy isn’t about fixing who you are. It’s about helping you reclaim who you’ve always been.

I’m not a therapist who quietly nods for fifty minutes.

I’ll challenge you when you need it. I’ll laugh with you when it helps. I’ll celebrate your wins, sit with you through your losses, and remind you that healing doesn’t happen by becoming someone else—it happens by finally giving yourself permission to become more fully yourself.

As a gay man living with HIV, I understand that identity isn’t something you treat around—it’s something you honor. My lived experience informs my work, but your story always remains at the center of the room.

If you’re looking for a therapist who understands queer life beyond the stereotypes, who welcomes conversations about sex without shame, who celebrates healthy kink and diverse relationship structures, and who believes that healing should lead to greater freedom rather than greater conformity, I’d be honored to walk alongside you.

You don’t have to keep carrying what was never yours to hold.

Let’s get to work.

People, I realize, cannot live like a patch of grass. They could, I suppose, at one time, but we are so far removed from that time that it is hard to conceive. People can, however, live their lives with the realization that they are constantly changing, products of their changing environment and changing situations, and time. They can live, at least, in harmony with the knowledge and co-exist with it instead of working against it.
